How to Become a Better Marketer in 2020

So you want to become a better marketer?

In this blog, I’ll give you four techniques you can use to help you improve your marketing skills. The tips will range from actionable advice to mindset adjustments. No matter what discipline of marketing you fall in to, these tips will help your progression.

1. Focus on inputs

Instead of only looking at results, start with looking at what daily efforts you can put in and how you can iterate and improve. In the above video, I mention a photography class from the University of Florida and a class that was split into two different groups. The first was told to submit one (their best) photograph at the end of the year for grading, and the second was told to take as many photos as possible. At the end of the year, the two groups came together, and the best photos were selected by the professor. Surprisingly, the best photos all came from group two. This was because this group was continually iterating as they took photos, playing with exposures, and focus on the cameras. The first group spent too much time thinking about the perfect photo instead of putting in the practice needed to produce great photography.

2. Learn from results

Past results can dictate future inputs in marketing (I know that’s a mouthful). Basically, you should have a focus on iterating, and looking at past results gives you the data to make informed decisions on what things you should continue doing, and what activities you should stop doing.

3. Tell a story

storytellingPeople resonate and remember stories—and they buy more product from brands that tell compelling stories. If you think about your favorite brands and why you purchase their products, it’s most likely due to the story that they are telling. Every time Nike releases a commercial, they aren’t selling shoes, they’re selling stories.

4. Partnerships

When you look at how to promote your business, think about other companies that share a customer base with you but are not competitors–then partner with them. This means if you’re realtor, find a moving company you can work with. You will be able to funnel each other customers and grow both of your businesses.
